Site: Oh So Modern Jezebel
Subject: Kitajima Yuuri from Dragonaut -The Resonance-
Creator: Shiori of Time-stranger.net ([info]missdeep)

- - - - - - - - - - -

Functionality: 10/10
The functionality of Shiori's site seems to be in really good shape - it works in most of the popular browsers. Navigation is clear and easy to understand.

Aesthetics: 10/10
This site is very simplistic in design - in every sense of the word. From colors, to text, and even the size and shape of the layout, it's easy enough to read and navigate and at the same time, easy to access any section as there is only three categories to choose from the menu. There's really not much else to say about the aesthetic value of this layout.

We would prefer to see some borders on the images and some spacing between the images/text, but that isn't really a big deal, just a thought. Otherwise, everything looks great.

Creativity: 2/5
We understand that your layout isn't the main focus of the site, but we have to give you a score for this anyways. The layout is kind of general in look and nothing particularly makes it stand out. It is aesthetically pleasing, however.

Information: 48/50
As far as we can tell, your site is incredibly complete when it comes to information. Dragonaut being primarily an anime series, you have detailed pages about the show as well as Kitajima's role in it. You even include a page about the "special crack episode", which is awesome. While there are few relationship pages, each page is so detailed and jam-packed with analysis that one almost forgets that there are only three. We get the feeling that you've covered her three most important relationships, so there's still a sense of completeness, too.

Two points were taken off for the few pages you have upcoming that seem fairly integral and we eagerly await the completion of this shrine even though it's already really great as it is.

Style/Organization: 14/15
Your writing style is very clear and easy to understand. Even though none of us are very familiar with the series except for what we've read on this shrine / Wikipedia, you explained things thoroughly enough that we could still have a good idea of what's going on. Yuuri, her job, and her place in the series are made crystal clear.

We (mostly Lore) tried very hard to look for mistakes, aka grammatical errors or typos, but found very few. (note that Lore has read through this shrine so many times by now that she can practically recite pages from memory and even she couldn't find anything) This is an amazing feat that shows just how much careful thought and effort was put into the creation of this shrine. The few found are listed:

On the main WOMAN page, the description for NINETEEN YEARS AGO merely says "Dragon eggs! On the ocean".

From here: In Greek mythology you'd know him as the personification of death, in Dragonaut
The comma should be a period to separate two sentences, otherwise it's a rather long run-on sentence.

From here: All Kitajima can can do
There's an extra "can".

The one point taken off is extremely nitpicky on our part. In our opinion, the images on the pages could stand to be a bit bigger. Also, on some of the longer pages (like this one) you have all of the images at the bottom of the page. We think that your images would be better served like this where the image goes with the pertinent section of text so that the two work side-by-side.

One point also worthy of note is that you use and quote various articles on some of your pages. This is very impressive because so few sites do that nowadays. It really adds some insight and credibility to your already thorough information and is definitely praiseworthy.

Individuality: 10/10
This shrine is pretty much a textbook definition of what a good shrine should be. There is an impressive media section that has pretty much every file a Kitajima fan would want, for example. This goes way above and beyond just making a site to a character. The other content pages are informative, but also entertaining to read even for someone who has little knowledge of the series. It's clear that while you love Kitajima dearly, you don't treat her as SRS BUSINESS, and neither should anyone else. There is humor to be found here and your voice really comes out on every page, even pages that have the potential to be very boring and dry like the Q&A page. We really have nothing else to say - this is a very unique and memorable shrine.

Site: Adieu
Subject: Nagisa Kaworu from Neon Genesis Evangelion
Creator: Masao of Shinshoku.net ([info]kitare)

- - - - - - - - - - -

Functionality: 10/10
The functionality of Masao's site seems to be in really good shape - it works in most of the popular browsers. Coding seems to be rather clean and navigating the site is as easy as spotting the white dots on the black background.

Aesthetics: 7/10
We'd have to say though, the text is quite small but we suppose that's part of the style on this layout; we do have to address that this makes it semi-difficult to read, especially on larger resolutions (like Lore's). However, the light font on black background saves the text from disappearing into the abyss, haha. As far as aesthetics go, we would say this is leaning towards the simplistic side, but not in a bad way and for good reason: the colors and mood of this layout really represent Kaworu's character. The black background and soft greyish/purple/indigo tones give it a nostalgic kind of feeling, a sad kind of nostalgia, which does add to the experience of the site.

We wouldn't say that the colors blend well, but white/light grey on black is easy to read -- and it sort of helps the small font stand out. Creativity is only abundant where the colors can really define the tragedy in this short-lived character -- the colors are very muted and bland, but this seems purposely done in order to match Kaworu, who seems to be an empty sort of character. We also like the touch of white dots that makes it seem as if it were in space.

Other than the font size, what we have to address most with this layout is the colors used in the layout. While we gather that your image doesn't give you very much to work with in terms of color diversity, if you could make your bold/italic tags more vibrant, it would pop a little more and the text would be more viewer-friendly, perhaps, and more inviting to read.

Also there seems to be a large gap between your footer and content, which looks a little odd. Our suggestion is to make that gap smaller by maybe ... 20px or so. In addition, since your footer isn't part of the main layout, we would personally make the colors on that darker, and decrease the line height, but that's just an idea.

One last thing to think about: you have no images on your content pages, which makes it difficult to read without thinking "OMG WALL OF TEXT". Some accompanying images would make things a little easier to follow, especially for those who aren't as familiar with the series.

Creativity: 2/5
The layout is evocative of Kaworu's character - Chrissy and Airi aren't familiar with Evangelion, but in discussing with Lore and reading through the site we can all agree that it conveys an appropriate look for the site's purposes. However, it is a little bland and not terribly memorable - some additional colors and BLING would make it more unique. Lore has no idea what Chrissy means by BLING, but suggests that some more images (see previous paragraph) would help a lot, overall.

Information: 45/50
Even though your shrine is allegedly focused on the manga version of this character, you do mention his anime characterization in passing. Considering that the anime series is actually the canon (the manga is an adaptation of it), we personally think that you could have stood to place a bit more importance on it.

Also, Evangelion has a number of other versions to it, from remimagined manga series such as Gakuen Datenroku and Angelic Days to the new movies and the highly controversial End of Evangelion. While there's nothing wrong with making a shrine to a specific version of a character, mentioning Kaworu's role in these other series may make your shrine more complete.

There is only one part of the information on your shrine that has been upcoming for a while, but the rest of the tribute stands just fine without it, so that's not a problem. As far as accuracy goes, you back up your information with cited quotes, so there's no question that you've done your research and are very familiar with your subject material.

Style/Organization: 12/15
The information of the shrine is organized in a fine manner. Rather than having many pages of basic information, you combined certain pages that are common to most shrines. (for example, putting an analysis of Kaworu's name on the same page where you introduce the character and series) This leads to having less, but more focused, pages. Instead of a personality section, you reveal facets of his personality through analyzing his personal relationships; you show rather than tell, and this is very impressive.

There are a number of places where your phrasing is a little bit awkward/confusing, or you have a grammatical mistake/typo, but overall these do not detract from your content too much. You should particularly be careful of switching tenses too often, as it makes things a bit confusing.

Individuality: 10/10
This shrine is very personal, which makes it interesting to read. Your opinion comes out on pretty much every page, but particularly on the final choice page, where all of it is your speculation and analysis of Shinji and Kaworu. There are many sites where we can find information on this series and on Kaworu as a character, but making it clear HOW he's important to you and WHY that is so makes all the difference.

Each review is done as a collaboration between all three of us rather than assigning one reviewer to each submitted site. The shrines will be graded for their design and their content.

This is the basic rubric that we'll be using. Please note that we will probably address more than the few questions stated in each question; this is only meant to be a very loose set of guidelines so that you know what to expect from our reviews.

You've arrived at [info]Disco Samba. We're basically a team of people that review shrines. People submit a form telling us that they'd like to be reviewed, then our team works together and critiques the site based on both design and content. Your reviewers are [info]ashe (Reflera.org), [info]omame (Pacificdusk.org), and [info]futagoza (Fated.nu).

You do NOT need a LiveJournal account to submit a site for review. It's perfectly acceptable to email us if you don't have an account you can use to comment to our submission post with.

* All reviews are simply personal opinions about a particular website. None of us are claiming to be shrine-making gurus. If there are parts of our critique that you do not agree with, that's fine. Take it or leave it and use what you will. In the end, shrines are a personal creative project, so there's really nobody that can decide their worth but the people who make them.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask here. ♥
